Get the Skinny on Dairy-Free Desserts
Dairy-free dessert recipes are all the rage thanks to the rising popularity of dairy-free diets.
The rationale for choosing a dairy-free diet varies from person to person. For some, it has to do with dairy allergies and sensitivities. For others, it’s all about personal ethics or health concerns. Many people find that their congestion, acne, or digestive problems disappear within just a few weeks of removing dairy from their diet. The best way to learn how dairy impacts your body is to remove it for at least one month and observe any mental or physical changes you experience.
Remember that you can still indulge in plenty of sweet treats and dairy-free desserts as you explore your body's response to a dairy-free diet. One of the best dairy substitutes is nuts, especially when it comes to making desserts. You can use nuts to make dairy-free ice cream, cheese(less)cake, chocolate, cookies, pies, cakes, candies, frosting and more.
Although there are many dairy substitutes, keep in mind that some are healthier than others. The two healthiest dairy alternatives are coconut (dried) and nuts. Nuts, in particular, are often used in vegetarian, gluten-free, paleo, vegan, and raw diets. They provide a texture and density similar to that of dairy, plus they provide good, healthy fats (among other great nutritional benefits). However, all nuts are not created equal; some nuts work better than others as a dairy replacement. Cashews and almonds, specifically, come closest to replicating dairy products - even cheese! You can learn how and why nuts make the best cheese replacement on our blog.
For those who are lactose intolerant or who have strong adverse reactions to dairy, ice cream was never an option to begin with. But, with the right tools and the right nuts, you can make dairy-free ice cream that will give any traditional ice cream a run for its money. Although you can also use coconut to make ice cream, we contest that ice cream made with nuts makes the pallet much happier (and we think you’ll agree)!
