Nuts About Dates

All You Need To Know About Date Fruits

Nuts About Dates Dates have been a staple food of the Middle East and the Indus Valley for thousands of years. They are believed to have originated around Iraq, and have been cultivated since ancient times from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt, possibly as early as 4000 BCE. The Ancient Egyptians used the fruits to make date wine, and ate them at harvest. Dates are the fruit of the date palm, maturing in large groups underneath the protective fronds of the date palm tree. These magical palms can grow as tall as 100ft and continue to produce their delicious fruit for more than sixty years.

Dates are dark brown and around 1.5" in length. They are yellow in the early stages of maturing, known as "kimri". The next stage of maturity is known as "khlal", which means full-sized and crunchy. The final stage is referred to as "rutab", when the fruit is fully ripened and soft, and "tamr" which is fully ripened and dried.
